Uncaria tomentosa, known also as Vilcacora, is a liana that grows in natural conditions in the South American rainforest and is widely used in the traditional, or folk medicine. A host of works have been published on medicinal application of Vilcacora and the active substances it contains. The most prominent biological group of active substances of Vilcacora are alkaloids, especially pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids. These alkaloids influence mainly the cells of the immunological system responsible for the non-specific and cellular immunity.

Vilcacora has been studied in many countries. The investigations carried in Moscow lasted 6 years and showed that Vilcacora extract had immunostimulating and immunomodulating activity, so it could be used both in prevention and therapy of cancer.
Hagers Handbuch der Pharmazeutischen Praxis classified Uncaria tomentosa xtract as the preparation with cytostatic, antiviral, oedema-reducing, antimutagenic properties as well as the ones that regulated the activity of the central nervous system and stimulated phagocytosis.

Standardised Uncaria tomentosa preparations registered and applied by Austria, Germany and Spain as the pharmaceuticals are sold at the doctor’s order, mainly for the immunological system disorders and as the adjuvant therapy in cancer to relieve the side effects of radio- and chemotherapy.
